The recently renovated Dr. Gustavo Monteiro state of the art football ground at Candolim was inaugurated at the hands of the former MLA, Tomazinho Cardozo. The total estimate of this ground and other facilities that will be provided here is around Rs. 1.40 crores. This new stadium has been renovated through CSR funding from panch members, Calangute MLA as well as the villagers. The ground has a playing turf of natural lawn, good seating arrangements and changing rooms for the players will be built shortly. The work on this ground begun in June and has been completed within a short span of time.
The special invitee at the occasion, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, congratulated the Candolim panchayat and the villagers who have supported to renovate the ground. Villagers have contributed to create this new ground and it has been built by good consultants. He said that proper parking facilities will be provided around the stadium, changing room with toilet and bathrooms will also be put in place soon. “A new futsal ground in Calangute will be also be ready shortly. We will be constructing new grounds in Parra, Nagoa- Arpora while the ground at Calangute will be upgraded. The youth need these facilities to play football which is the official sport of Goa. We need to promote football so that kids come out at a very young age. There is also a need to provide kids coming here with coaches and maintain the ground all year round. Maintenance work will be carried out by the panchayat,” said Lobo. Also present at the inauguration was the Sarpanch of Candolim panchayat, Blaise Fernandes and other panch members.
