Corrupt Fisheries Dept has not implemented ban on LED Fishing and Bull Trawling

Calangute MLA and Deputy Speaker of Goa Assembly Michael Lobo, who is also an officiating Speaker, on Friday alleged there has been no implementation of the order banning LED fishing and bull trawling in the state waters till date as “marine police and officials of the fisheries departments are involved in corruption.” Two-time BJP legislator Lobo, on Friday, took a delegation of Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott, a body of traditional fishermen to the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai at the Secretariat and raised the LED fishing and bull trawling issue. Housing Minister Jayesh Salgaonkar, the fisheries secretary Daulat Hawaldar were also present. GRE submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister pointing out blatant violation of the order banning LED fishing and bull trawling in the state, and demanded a stop to all destructive gears of fishing.

Speaking to media, Lobo blamed the government for not implementing the ban order for last one year, and alleged that “due to the corruption on the part of the marine police and officials of fisheries department, the livelihood of traditional fishermen is at stake and fate of conservation of marine resources is in dark. If LED fishing and bull trawling activities continue despite the ban, Goan will not get fish in the near future. We have demanded with the Chief Minister that either withdraw the ban order or implement it in true spirit so that interest of the traditional fishermen is protected,” he said. He also said that the ban is being implemented all over India, including Maharashtra and Karnataka, and added that Goa is an only state which is not implementing the same. The general secretary of GRE Olencio Simoes said that the new Chief Minister has assured them that the government will resolve the issue in next eight days. He said that if the issue is not resolved in eight days, the traditional fishermen will be forced to take law in their hands or their families will be forced to come on the streets. Later, Deputy Chief Minister Sardesai told the media that the government has decided to take strict measures to implement the order banning LED fishing and bull trawling in the state.
