Asserting his plans to establish world-class sports infrastructure in Calangute, local MLA Michael Lobo informed that three football grounds will be developed in Candolim, Parra and Arpora-Nagao at a total cost of around Rs 3.50 crore. He also said that swimming pools will be built close to the football grounds in Parra and Arpora-Nagoa. “I want to introduce world-class sports facilities in my constituency and then move to other constituencies in the State,” Lobo said. The Calangute MLA was addressing a news conference along with Arpora-Nagoa Sarpanch Sakaram Naik and former sarpanch and panch, Salim Sayyed, in Arpora. Lobo said the works of all three football grounds would be taken up through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). He said the existing football ground in Candolim has been renovated with a new lawn and other facilities and will be inaugurated within eight days. “Nearly 90 percent work of the ground is complete. We want to inaugurate it before the code of conduct comes into play,” he said. Similarly, he said 50 percent work of football ground in Parra was complete and the remaining work will be completed in another two months.
The Calangute MLA informed that in Arpora-Nagoa, two football grounds will be developed – the football ground of St Joseph’s High School and another at Arpora, near Salim Saturday Night market. He said there were plans to set up an entertainment zone near the Salim Saturday Night market in Arpora. “No land will be acquired to set up the entertainment zone. We will sign an agreement with private owners and the communidade and build the infra in the area. That way, the land remains with the owners and they will be paid handsomely on monthly basis,” he said.
