If the waste keeps coming at Sonsoddo, then bioremediation would have no meaning

The Minister for Waste Management Michael Lobo will be visiting the Margao Municipal Council, on Wednesday, in order to know about the litigations pertaining to the Sonsoddo waste dump, decide on the new plant, and discuss and decide on the commencement of the bioremediation of the century-old Sonsoddo waste dump. Officials from the waste management department, director of municipal administration, senior lawyers and a couple of contractors would also accompany the Minister during the visit.  “I am visiting the civic body to understand about the litigations, the various cases that are going on in different courts pertaining to the Sonsoddo waste dump. The government advocates will also be with me. The visit to the MMC is important since the government is also being the made party in the cases,” said Lobo while speaking to this daily. He said that the government has the intention to clear the litigations before putting up a new plant and start the bioremediation of the old dump. “I am going to visit first the MMC and then the site. If the waste keeps coming at Sonsoddo, then bioremediation would have no meaning. I will take all the three legislators into confidence before taking any decision on the issue,” he maintained.

Interestingly, hearing in two court cases are scheduled on Wednesday. While one case is in the High Court, another case is in the Sessions court, Margao, of Fomento Green, versus MMC. It may be recalled that Lobo had assured to start the bioremediation process of the old dump of Sonsoddo from first week of November.  However, it was delayed as the government is trying all options and methods to minimize the waste being brought at Sonsoddo. Meanwhile, from August 8 to November 26, the MMC has paid the Fomento Green company Rs 1 lakh a day to treat the wet waste, generated by the people staying within the MMC areas. The Sessions court had asked the MMC to find out a solution, while urging the Fomento to continue providing the service till such a time. I am going to visit first the MMC and then the site.
