Margao may see an epidemic-like situation in future

Minister of Waste Management, Science and Technology, Port and Rural Development Michael Lobo while refuting allegations by Margao Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai said that his earlier statement on Margao garbage issue was non-political and further stated that if the problem of garbage is not tackled, Margao may see an epidemic-like situation in future. It may be recalled that while reacting to the the earlier statement of Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo on Sonsodo and Margao garbage issue, the Margao Municipality head said that Michael Lobo should first try to solve the problems in his constituency rather than making statements on garbage issue of Margao. While speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a book release function, Lobo while reacting to a statement of Margao chairperson, said that his intention was to highlight the intensity of garbage issue and there was nothing political in that statement. He said that the garbage collected at Sonsodo is more than 2.2 lakh tonnes and if this garbage is not treated there then it could raise fears of an epidemic like plague erupting in the area. Meanwhile, Lobo made it clear that the intention of providing challan books with muncipalities and panchayats is to fine people who dump garbage in open spaces is to deter people from throwing garbage on open places. He also said that soon a tender will be floated to setting a plant to treat e-waste as a site for the plant is already identified in an industrial area. He said that construction debris will also be treated at this plant while he refused to divulge the exact location of the plant. He also said that the 200 tonnes Bainguinim garbage treatment plant work order will be issued once the pollution control board gives environmental clearance for the plant.
