In a bid to clear the air viz-a-viz the new Ronaldo circle at Calangute, Dy Speaker and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has clarified that the circle is being redesigned with help of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and not public money. Social media was abuzz with posts that the Ronaldo statue would come up with government funding with many criticising the move. Speaking to Herald Lobo said that fake news is being spread on the social media by his opponents. “In order to solve the problems of traffic jams at Calangute Association circle (Calangute-Baga circle), there is need to redesign the circle and we will install Cristiano Ronaldo statue through CSR and not from public money so as to inspire youth to take up football and become superstars. Also traffic channelisers will be installed on the three main roads leading to Calangute Association circle,” he said. Further, he added, “For those who did not understand properly, it has now been clarified to clear your doubts. Public money is not someone’s private property. Public money will be spent exclusively on public. Kindly refrain from spreading rumours,” he said.
Meanwhile, Lobo informed that the setting up of a shelter for stray animals in Calangute has been delayed because of lack of funds. Lobo said land measuring 30,000 sqm belonging to the communidade has been identified for a shelter. “An amount of Rs 8 crore is needed for the project, but no fund is coming from the state government. I urge locals to provide money for the proposed shelter where the strays can be kept, fed and looked after,” he said. The MLA said a lot of accidents are taking place, especially at night, due to stray cattle. “I had written a letter to Chief Minister requesting him to allot fund, but there is no sign of it. So, I am requesting all like-minded people to come forward. We can take this up under CSR,” he added.
