The BBSM is looking backward." The government has decided to hand it over to GTDC with a view that maintenance of the historic monument will be easier. Baga beach in the north has become another coastal stretch to be affected by sand erosion. Locals including the fishermen, shack owners and water sports boat operators have expressed concern over the damage the beach has suffered and called for immediate measures.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said it is a serious matter and that the National Institute of Oceanography should look into it and come out with a solution. Lobo demanded an amendment to the Goa, Daman and Diu Tourist Trade Registration Act to increase the fine from 2,000 to 20,000. He also said that the law should be made stringent so that foreigners are scared to start businesses without a valid visa. Goa government has lifted the ban in North Goa. It has also allowed water sports activities, started with the tourism season. The fishing ban was ordered by the Captain of Ports. The Shack Owners Welfare Society-Goa, on Wednesday, met chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar, tourism minister Dilip Parulekar and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, asking the government to declare the beach shack policy within the next 15 days. “The Calangute and Candolim Comunidades have offered to give 13 lakh sq mtrs of land to build infrastructure and entertainment facilities. The government will use this land to create infrastructure and the land has been notified in the land use map,” informed Lobo. Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, while addressing the agitating shack operators, said that he is with the shack operators on this issue. Lobo said that now the GCZMA has given its nod for the beach shack policy.
